Hairstyling is an art, and every artist needs the proper tools to do the job. For stylists, that would be their scissors. Like painters that use different brushes for their art, stylists must also be adept at the use of varying styling scissors.

Short-bladed Scissors

As a stylist, short-bladed scissors are your most essential tools. Your skill with these scissors will largely determine your success as a stylist. Short-bladed scissors enable you to make pinpoint cuts and flawless precision work. The shorter blade gives you more control over your scissors, allowing you to undercut hair easier, cut around the ear, and make excellent final touches for perfect styling. You’ll be working with these short-bladed scissors for more extended periods compared to your other scissors, so make sure to get ones that are comfortable to use. Precision work is exacting and time-consuming, and the different angles you need to make precise cuts can put a lot of strain on your wrists. Consider using an offset scissor or a swivel scissor. These scissors can minimize the stress on your wrists and lower your risk of getting carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Long-bladed Scissors

If you need cleaner lines and uniformity, then it’s time to use your long-bladed scissors. These scissors cut longer sections of hair, giving your cuts more consistency. They’re also the tools to use when you need to cut a lot of hair, such as when a client with long hair asks for a shorter style. Long-bladed scissors work well with the scissors-over-comb technique or cutting over your knuckles. However, you’ll still need to use your shorter scissors to make the final cuts. As much as possible, use your elbows to angle your cuts instead of bending your wrists. This practice not only makes you appear more dignified and professional, but it also takes a lot of strain away from your wrists.

Thinning Scissors

You’ll need a bit of experience to master the use of thinning scissors. These scissors have notches or teeth on one side and a cutting edge on the other. These notches allow thinning shears to thin out thick or bulky portions of hair. These scissors will enable you to blend and soften hair, creating a more professional styling look. Thinning scissors should be used sparingly, especially if you haven’t mastered them. Cutting too much hair can be a big problem and your clients will not be happy.

Texturing Scissors

Texturizing scissors work similar to thinning scissors. They have fewer notches, usually just around 7-15. These scissors are mostly used to manage bulky hair, particularly for curly hair. The blunt bob is one of the year’s top trends, and you can achieve this look with the correct use of both thinning and texturizing scissors.

In the end, styling hair requires a lot of skill and a lot of scissors. Each scissor has its particular use, and each requires different techniques. Practice each of their applications and make sure to purchase scissors that are both comfortable and easy to use.
